Joshua Smith, MD
Physician
Dr. Smith attended and graduated from medical school at the University of Oklahoma and completed his residency training at Great Plains Family Medicine, where he gained extensive and broad experience in procedures not traditionally performed by family medicine physicians. This program also had a strong focus on geriatric care. Thanks to that experience, he worked in emergency departments and long-term acute care facilities (LTACs), where his responsibilities ranged from running codes to ventilator management to wound care.
After completing his residency and obtaining board certification, Dr. Smith has utilized his expertise in a variety of different settings; from family medicine and providing rural care, to managing inpatient services and working within the emergency department.
Dr. Smith serves as the medical director at the Oklahoma City-County Health Department (OCCHD) and is the tuberculosis control officer for Oklahoma County, where he manages many of the active TB cases in the state. He is an expert in isolating contagious patients and was responsible for developing and implementing response protocols for recent public health threats such as COVID-19 and Monkeypox. This role has made him one of the foremost experts in tuberculosis in Oklahoma and a key contact for building responses to contagious illnesses, particularly in vulnerable populations like those in nursing homes.
